This weekend, I returned to my childhood stomping grounds at the Shakespeare Club’s Annual Spring Rummage Sale! I went for the vibes + nostalgia but left with a vintage Givenchy bracelet for a total deal!
Rummage Sales can be such a treasure trove for us thrifters! I like to think of them as “cutting out the middleman” when I need a break from thrift gouging. Not every rummage sale is worth the trek, so here is what I like to look for:
-Do some research online (FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc)
-Scan those listing photos/descriptions
-Assemble your wishlist and set a budget for first day items
-If anything caught your eye but wasn’t quite in the budget, you can always try heading back first thing for the final sale and they will usually offer a 50% discount. Sometimes the item will still be there and others, it’ll be gone but it’s always worth a shot! You might even find something else you love in the process
The Shakespeare Club’s origins date back to May 2, 1897, when 20 women gathered at Mollie Schueler’s home to form a women’s organization. Choosing the name “Shakespeare Club” allowed them to pursue their intellectual interests without male opposition. My grandma June was the president in 1997-1998 and was a member for decades. I wore my first vintage outfit at their pageant that year (an antique victorian girls dress).
I spent much of my childhood attending history-themed charity events carefully planned by these ladies and playing with my grandma’s antique trinkets / tchochkes around the house. I didn’t realize it then, but she & my father would plant the seed that eventually blossomed into my life’s passion: preserving / sharing history with others & bringing people together to share in these findings! She was a fabulous woman and I know she smiles down on all of you when you thrift and save cool things! Thanks again to the ladies at the Shakespeare Club for having me! ❤️
